If I knew then what I know now, would I still be a teacher? That’s a hard question to answer, and I’m so glad that, whether I answer it or not, it’s not like I can go back in time and change MY history.
I am a mother of three adult children from two different dads, and I am on my third marriage. We just celebrated 10 glorious years of wedded bliss. I do not have any souvenirs, aka, children, with him. He’s a great stepfather, but I really don’t know how he would be as a “daddy.”
In between three husbands and three children, I did have a life where I experienced the usual heartache, family drama, moving around the country and living overseas. My life has been pretty good. I can’t really complain too much. I mean I could, but what good would it do now? There’s no doubt I complained back then. The bad choices and terrible people I met over the years were enough to gripe about. But…I know how lucky I really am…even way back when. I have a great career teaching second grade. I have healthy children. I have a great husband…well most of the time he’s great. The rest of the time he gets on my nerves with those little things men do with occasionally leaving the toilet seat up or listening to him clear his throat for ten minutes in the shower then again while he brushes his teeth for the two-plus minutes we’re supposed to brush our teeth for.
So why did I choose the name of my blog “Inside the Classroom & Everything In Between?” There is so much more that we experience outside of those classroom walls. There is so much more that I have experienced in my 18-plus years in the public education system, both inside and outside the classroom, and everywhere in between. Did I mention that I am presently taking college courses so that I will have a master’s degree? This is something I never really wanted to do until last school year, but that’s a conversation for another day. I will graduate in December, you know, if I pass my practicums, which I am in the process of taking right now. One more starts in October, and then I am finished.
So, what will you find here? You will read a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. I guess it really depends on the day I’m having at school. Well…I guess it also depends on how life is going outside of school, too. I’m sure I will share stories from the classroom…or the principal’s office. I’m not perfect. Sheesh. I will share ideas that either I came up with, found from an influencer, or got from my teammates that were so wonderful I just have to tell everyone all about them. Or it might be something you should just never, ever try. I’ll be your guinea pig so you don’t have to be. I will also circle back around to the little snippets of my life I shared and more that were huge experiences to me at the time. Maybe I need to read someone else’s experiences so that I feel better about myself. I’m kidding. I’m kidding. Maybe we can help each other out.
As for the question I started with…I won’t be answering that just yet. I’m pretty sure I’m still contemplating life’s career decisions. After all, life doesn’t come with a set of already-written lesson plans complete with the objectives and learning targets for every lesson. Some of the most important lessons are the ones you have to learn the hard way.
